There Are Some Things More Important | Career Angles
There is a wonderful story that Christopher Scalia has been sharing about his father, Justice Antonin Scalia and his relationship with justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Judge Jeffrey Sutton who had worked for Scalia went to visit him not long before his passing. During the visit, Scalia pointed to two dozen roses that he was going to be delivering to Justice Ginsburg for her birthday.
Sutton asked him, “So what good have all these roses done for you? Name one five-four case of any significance where you got Justice Ginsburg’s vote.”
Scalia replied, “Some things are more important than votes.”
Their friendship was as notable as the disagreements. Each made the other one better.
As you deal with some of the dramas and/or traumas of your day with one person or another, there may be opportunities for you to recognize that winning is less important than other things.
There is no need to destroy someone for you to win.
There are some things more important.
