I used to work at a search firm populated by people in their 20’s. They used to be dismissive to those of us who were in their 40’s, as I was. They kept to their own close knot circle, would go drinking after work (which frankly, I wasn’t interested in) and mocked those of us who were older than them.

One day, I became particularly annoyed at one of them and some of the things they were saying, walked over to him and said, “I’m your future . . . if you’re lucky.” Our relationship changed positively almost immediately.

And I want to also say that many of them were my past, as well . . . Thinking as though I had superior knowledge and that others are dopes.

We’re all trying. Some get more success than others and do it differently than others. Some do it better than others.

Mocking, dismissing, or, in my case, ignoring “the other person” reinforces our stupidity and false belief in ourselves.
