I Am Not Your Slave | Career Angles

Slavery in many forms has existed for thousands of years. Its brutality today is different than what it was in the past. Today’s subjugation begins in school where you are conditioned to obedience to move ahead in the workplace.

Once you get that job, many people are in roles where they are asked to follow orders and do what they’re told without thought. You may be developing systems. You may be doing accounting or engineering. You may be doing work supporting others. Your job involves being a slave to the demands of someone else.

The sad truth is that your slave master is often a slave to someone else.

Before you think I’m going to go off on an anti-capitalist rant, I am not. Institutions, whether capitalist, communist, socialist, monarchical, theocratic, or just plain autocratic, demand fealty.

The question is, “Does that work for you?”

Over time, we individually surrender our free will to think for ourselves and outsource it to others.

We forget our desire to live freely.

We forget our desires to be free.

The trade-offs we make our more and more one-sided and, once we get there, there isn’t much difference between where we were and where we now are.
