Confidence | Career Angles

The sports pages carry interesting observations that can be applied to work. As I read a local newspaper and an article about the New York Jets, one of their coaches was interviewed about a new player.

“Quincy’s biggest thing and from what I saw on the tape was confidence. I think he lost his confidence for whatever the reason. For me as a coach and mentor, the biggest thing for me is for me to get these guys to believe in themselves and get his confidence back and to help them with this technique.”

The people that you manage are not robots. They need to be taught, encouraged, and “love’em up.”

As this coach points out, your job is to be a coach and a mentor. Thus, it is important to develop a relationship with your people where they both trust you and know that you demand standards of excellence from them.

They need to believe that you are there to help them AND get results, that they matter to you and want to help them succeed.

Yes, they are hired to do a job but you will get more from them with both care and criticism, not just criticism.

Versatility in your approach to your people should be part of your technique. Another major part needs to be the selection of your team. It is easier to be an effective coach with good players.
